Final Exams

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
Good afternoon.  Final Exams begin next week for all GHS students.  Final Exams represent an important opportunity for students to show their learning and either help improve or maintain their grades in each course.  A few important notes:

*School begins at the regular time of 7:30 am each day.

*There will be no afternoon PowerHour but there will be PowerHour on Thursday morning only.

*Buses will run at their regular times all week, and all students will remain in school until 2:30 each day (except on PLC Wednesday when they will leave at the PLCr time of 2:00).

*On Monday, seniors will take their period 3 Final Exam early, while all other students will be in their period 3 classes preparing for their final exam.  Seniors will be expected to leave the school building on the last day of school (Thursday) after their last final.

*Only those students who were distance learning as of the end of April can take their finals online.

*All in-person students must take final exams in person at GHS.  If a student misses a final exam, for any reason, and cannot make it up before the school year ends, that student is required to come into school the next week (Tuesday, June 1st through Friday, June 4th) between 8 am and 12 noon to take the final(s) missed.

*School issued devices and charges must be turned in at the end of school as well to avoid being charged.  A school messenger will come out later this week with procedures.

*The full schedule is linked here.

Please encourage your child to work hard in preparation, try their very best, and finish the year as well as they can.

Thank you-

Important Information

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
GHS families:

Good morning. Yesterday was a busy day for GHS as we communicated lots of new information to students and parents. Here is a quick review, and some clarifications, on what was presented yesterday.

  1. Online option for 2021-22. If you would like more information on the GHS online option for the 2021-22 school year, please review the information shared on our website at http://www.gws.k12.in.us/greenwood-high-school. Information is listed on the right hand side of the website.
  1. PowerHour. GHS will return to a PowerHour bell schedule beginning tomorrow, Thursday, April 8th. Students are aware of the expectations of maintaining this schedule.
  1. Prom. The following announcement was made this morning regarding prom.
Prom is being held Friday, April 23 from 7:30 - 11:00 p.m. at The Sycamore at Mallow Run. Prom is open to all GHS seniors and juniors. Sophomores as dates only might be eligible if spots allow. Tickets will ONLY be sold to SENIORS tomorrow and Friday during lunch. Seniors may put a junior or sophomore guest name on a waitlist; however, seniors may only purchase 1 ticket for themselves this week. If spots remain, these juniors and sophomores will go on a waitlist with junior dates selected before sophomore dates.

If spots are available, tickets will then be sold to juniors on Monday and Tuesday during lunch. Tickets prices are $30 per person and are non-refundable. Cash and checks payable to GHS Prom will be accepted. Credit cards cannot be accepted. Tickets may not be sold or transferred to anyone else. If tickets are still available after all seniors and juniors have had the opportunity to purchase them for themselves and sophomore dates, outside guests ages 16-20 will be permitted to attend starting with seniors first. No freshmen will be allowed to attend this year.

Appetizers and desserts will be served. Masks must be worn at all times and are mandatory. Students who wish to dance will do so in small friend groups with no “mosh style” dancing or large group dancing allowed. GHS reserves the right to monitor and maintain the number of students dancing at one time. Anyone with questions can contact the Prom coordinator at the email provided on the announcement page (Mrs. Erin Swisher: emswisher@comcast.net)
  1. Graduation. Graduation will take place Friday, May 28th at 7pm on the football field (weather permitting). All graduates will receive 4 tickets for family and friends. Our make-up date is the following day (Saturday) at 10:00am on the football field. If weather is still poor, we will move graduation to the main gym at 10:00am (Saturday). If so, the number of tickets available per graduate will be determined closer to the event, per JCHD.

Senior Class Composite Portrait

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
To ensure social distancing, we are continuing the change we made last year and most seniors are going to love. Instead of a formal cap & gown photo that would require everyone to gather rather closely, our senior portrait company is going to create a 16 x 20 composite of everyone’s senior pictures. As long as seniors posed for senior pictures through Prestige -- whether at the studio or during one of the make-up dates at the high school -- they’ll be included in this awesome composite picture that will also feature information about your class. Orders are due May 1.

Forms will be distributed during the Senior Meeting and are available in the high school office, too.

ASVAB

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
Below is a copy of the school messenger message going out tonight for sophomores in College/Career and any sophomore/junior without an ASVAB score:

Greenwood Community High School will be offering an ASVAB administration on March 9th at 7:30am.  The ASVAB stands for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery and it is a well-researched aptitude test that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success. Sophomores and Juniors who have not already participated in an ASVAB administration are scheduled to sit for the administration.

We encourage all students to take the ASVAB for multiple reasons.
  1. After participating in the ASVAB, students will have access to the the ASVAB Summary Results (ASR) sheet which includes a unique access code each student can use to login to the ASVAB program website and complete post-test career exploration and aptitude activities.
  • FOR STUDENTS IN THE 2023 Graduation Class: The Graduation Pathways graduation requirement plan requires that your student meet at least 1 Post- Secondary Ready Competency in order to earn a diploma. Our students have found good success meeting the ASVAB benchmark. We believe it is in all students' best interest to take the ASVAB exam as they attempt to meet one of those benchmarks
  • FOR STUDENTS IN THE 2022 Graduation Class: Students in the 2022 graduating class may choose to graduate under the class of 2023 and beyond graduation requirements called Graduation Pathways. Students who do not pass the ISTEP+ exam but do meet the Graduation Pathways requirements can opt into those requirements. This would mean that the student does not have to retake the ISTEP+ exam in their senior year and qualifies to earn a diploma. The ASVAB is one of the ways that students may meet the Post-Secondary Ready Competency that Graduation Pathways requires.  A qualifying score on the ASVAB is a 31 and for the aforementioned reasons, we are encouraging your student to take the ASVAB offered on Tuesday and put forth their best effort.
The Graduation Pathways Infographic  has been attached for your reference.

ASVAB results are reported to students and counselors on the ASVAB Summary Results sheet. Scores are released to military recruiters 7 calendar days after results are mailed to the school, without phone numbers or mailing addresses. To request that your student's scores not be provided to military recruiters, please complete this form

TO DISTANCE LEARNER FAMILIES
According to our records, your student has indicated that they will come to school to participate in the ASVAB administration. Distance Learners are encouraged to attend if possible.   Distance learning students may go home after the test is complete if they have their own ride home.  If they remain in the building after the test is complete, they can attend their classes virtually from the IMC.

Thanks for your time! Continue reading

Final Yearbook Sales (2020-2021)

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
This year’s yearbook has gone to press so students will get it during the last week of school. Don’t worry, though, the yearbook staff is creating the spring supplement that will cover all spring sports, the musical, prom, graduation, and other year-end activities. The supplement is designed to adhere to the inside back cover of the yearbook itself.

If you still have not ordered your yearbook, you definitely need to do that this week. The extras the yearbook ordered for late purchasers are almost sold out. This will be one you will especially want because it will be of historical significance with the pandemic.

Pick up an order form in the front office or print the one attached to this post if you’d like to pay with cash or check. You also can go to www.jostensyearbooks.com if you want to order using a credit card.

If you need to know if you've already purchased a yearbook, feel free to contact Denise Roberts at droberts@gws.k12.in.us Continue reading

Hybrid Information

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
A copy of last night's school messenger:

GHS families:

As a follow-up to Dr. DeKoninck's email, I would like to provide you with the GHS Hybrid schedule. As Dr. DeKoninck stated (his original statement is attached), we will be following the Hybrid schedule until further notice.

Here are a few items of note:
  1. If a household would like to follow only one schedule, but you have students living in the household with different last names, you are permitted to follow the oldest student's schedule.
  2. All students taking Central Nine (C9) will be expected to follow the directions of Dr. Kovach, Director of C9.
  3. As a reminder, we are on a regular school schedule tomorrow (Thursday) and an E-Learning day on Friday. Students do not need to report to school on Friday; however, they are expected to login and complete teacher assignments online.
  4. We will follow the GHS Hybrid Model beginning Monday, November 9th.
Thank you for your support and being flexible. Also, please reinforce with your student the importance of completing all work and following each teacher's directions. Enjoy your evening.

PSAT-Thursday

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
This Thursday, October 29th, all sophomores will take the PSAT at GHS. Also, any junior who signed up will also take the PSAT.

Students need to arrive at their testing rooms by 7:30 am on Thursday. Students will be informed of their testing location through their English teacher in class tomorrow.

On test day, students must bring a #2 pencil (non mechanical) and a calculator. Cell phones, smart-watches, and any other electronic devices must be powered down and in their bag during the administration.

The test will last approximately 3 ½ - 4 hours. Most students will be done with testing by approximately 11:15-30am. Some students may be testing longer if they have extended time accommodations.

Once the testing room has completed the administration they will be released to go home. Students may have lunch before leaving the building. If students do not have transportation they will report to the cafeteria for the remainder of the day.  Normal bus transportation is available at the beginning and end of the day.

Distance Learners will be testing in the Student Activities Complex and will report there for testing. They should enter door 31N so they will not have to enter the main building. Continue reading
