High School Graduation

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
Hello from Greenwood High School. Mark your calendars! GHS will hold the Class of 2020 graduation ceremony on Friday, July 17th at 7pm in the main gym. Our goal is to hold a traditional ceremony; however, due to any restrictions and/or guidelines that may be in place at that time, our format, number of attendees, traditions, etc. may need to be altered. Regardless, graduation in some form will take place on this day and time.

We want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we attempt to make many decisions which impact students and families differently. Please note we are looking for ways to honor our seniors leaving for the military. We will provide you those details as soon as they become available. Thank you.  Continue reading

GHS Seniors Updates-April 16

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
Seniors and parents-

Thank you for taking the time to watch the following video. We hope we addressed the many questions you may have regarding seniors and upcoming activities.

We would like to add one comment to the video. If we decide to go with a July 17th graduation ceremony (decision coming end of April), we have plans to recognize our military seniors being deployed in June. We will provide more information once we determine our final decision. The video will provide you more clarity.

Finally, please also see the attached document providing more information to go along with the video.

Thank you!

Semester Grades

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News

Hello GHS students and parents.

We want to thank you for supporting and contributing to our remote learning program. We wish circumstances were different, but we feel students are undergoing an educational experience that has benefits, and one many students may encounter later in life.

In this email, we would like to address the topic of grades, in particular semester grades. A semester grade is the final grade awarded and placed on a student’s transcript. It’s important to understand the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) is highly encouraging all high schools to award a semester grade for all students grades 9-12. Colleges, universities, NCAA Clearinghouse, scholarships, etc. will require letter grades. Pass/Fail is not a viable option for high school students as it may negatively impact a student's future. All semester grades earned this semester will be placed on a student’s transcript, including seniors.

So, at the end of this school year, we are asking all teachers to assign semester grades to all high school students. Semester grades will be based on a combination of 3rd quarter grades and 4th quarter work. Final exams will not take place this school year. Please note all students have already been awarded a 3rd quarter grade.

Teachers will be assigning semester grades based on the following criteria:

  1. A student can raise his/her semester grade above the 3rd quarter grade if he/she submits above standard work during the remote learning process. That’s a great incentive to do your best!
  2. A student’s semester grade will remain the same as his/her 3rd quarter grade as long as that student continues to be engaged/active in his/her classes. Simply stated, if students submit their work, with quality and effort, semester grades will not suffer (lower).
  3. A student’s semester grade could be lower than the 3rd quarter grade if he/she refuses to be engaged/active in his/her classes, or a student submits only a limited number of assignments. A “limited number of assignments” will be at the teacher’s discretion. Please keep in contact with your teacher to discuss if your grade is in jeopardy.
All students enrolled in AP and ACP (dual credit) courses will follow the grading scale of the university (or assigned teacher) awarding the semester grade. Central Nine (C9) semester grades are awarded by C9 teachers.

We hope this answers questions regarding semester grades. Please contact your teacher first if you have any questions. If they are unable to answer your question(s), please contact a school administrator or counselor. We appreciate everyone’s understanding, and we hope all students and families are safe and healthy. We miss our students. Thank you.

Canvas-Parent Observers

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
Parents/Guardians-

You have the ability to sign-up on Canvas to be a parent observer of your child(ren).  From the Canvas help guides:

"Observers can link their Canvas account to their student's account so they can see assignment dues dates, announcements, and other course content. Observers can view the course content but cannot participate in the course.  They can only see their own child's work and not any work or material from other students."

Please watch this video (less than 2 minutes) on how to get set-up as an observer.  You will receive an email confirmation once you have set up your account.

To add a second (or more students) to the ones you are observing, you will follow a similiar process and the directions are listed here.

Winter Percussion, Guard, Academic Team, Etc.

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
The yearbook and newspaper staffs are creating a special quarantine magazine designed to peel and stick inside the back of the 2019-2020 yearbooks since this has been such a significant part of the school year.

School groups -- such as Winter Percussion, Winter Guard, the Academic Team, etc. -- who lost their spring season is going to be part of that coverage. If you have a photo of your GHS student involved in these activities this year, please email that photo to droberts@gws.k12.in.us and include the student's name and cell phone number so a student reporter can reach out to him/her for caption information.

I must receive these photos and information by April 10 to be included. Continue reading

2019-2020 Yearbook Pick-Up

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
Yearbook Information. With so much happening in Indiana right now, the situation with yearbook pick-up has to be at the bottom of the list if it's even on the list, but I have received a few emails.

I want to assure all purchasers that we finalized our 2019-2020 yearbook before school shut down. And from what I'm reading in my journalism teacher forums, not many other yearbook staffs were in the same boat. This just shows you how awesome the yearbook staff has been this year.

We should receive our yearbook from the publisher within the next 2 months. As soon as the quarantine has been lifted, we will be able to plan yearbook distribution. Meanwhile, the yearbook and newspaper staffs are creating a special quarantine magazine designed to peel and stick inside the back of the yearbooks since this has been such a significant part of the school year.

Up-to-date information about GHS is available on this website and the Timberlines Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/GCHSTimberlines/?ref=bookmarks Continue reading
