Graduation Updates

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
Senior students and parents.

We are excited to graduate the Class of 2020 this Friday evening, and we appreciate your support as we attempt to comply with the ever-changing restrictions on small and large gatherings. With that in mind, we have been required to make several changes to this Friday's ceremony.

Linked below you will find an updated version of our commencement plan. Please read and be prepared to follow the changes. We cannot stress enough how fortunate we are to be able to bring this class together and allow at least three guests to be in attendance. We ask for your patience and compliance in executing our plan.

Thank you, and we'll see you this Friday evening, on the football field, at 8:30pm.

Welcome Greenwood Families

Hopefully, you have had a chance to read the Greenwood High School Roadmap that was emailed on 7/6/20. GCSC/GHS Roadmaps to Re-entry

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
Hello GHS families. We hope everyone is enjoying your summer. To be brief, you will find the following information in this email:
  1. GCSC (corporation) re-entry roadmap (attached)
  2. GHS re-entry roadmap (attached)
  3. Information regarding high school registration
Roadmaps:

Items in the GHS plan are addendums to the GCSC plan, so please read both. Both roadmaps respond to IDOE recommendations and have been approved by our local health department. If you have any questions, please email Assistant Principal, Craig Bruns at cbruns@gws.k12.in.us by Wednesday, July 8th. We will respond to your questions with another communication on Friday, July 10th.

Distance Learning:

The deadline to enroll in the distance learning option is July 17th. To enroll, please contact me at tgarrison@gws.k12.in.us by the 17th. Distance learning requires the following:
  • Students must be present (live) each day, each period. Students not logged in live will be counted absent.
  • Assignments, projects, and assessments will have strict deadlines, just like "in-person" school.
  • Once students begin distance learning, they will be required to remain in the program for the semester.
In general, please note this is not the same learning environment students experienced in the spring. Feel free to email me if you have questions.

HS Registration:

Tomorrow, July 7th, you will be receiving an email from GHS regarding registration. Please read as we have several changes.

We know opinions vary vastly, so please understand we are doing our best to balance all factors when developing a safe plan. As Dr. DeKoninck has stated several times, all plans are subject to change.

Thank you.  Continue reading

Class of 2020 Portrait - Changes

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
Class of 2020 Panoramic Photo

To ensure social distancing, we are making a change to the Class of 2020 panoramic photo that most seniors are going to love. Instead of a regular photo that would require everyone to gather rather closely, our senior portrait company is going to create a panoramic-sized composite of everyone's senior pictures. As long as you pose for senior pictures through Prestige -- whether last summer or during one of the make-up dates at the high school -- you'll be included in this awesome composite picture that will also feature information about your class. Please place your order by July 10 because no late orders can be accepted. Continue reading

Graduation

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
June 17, 2020

Greenwood Community High School will be celebrating the Class of 2020 with an indoor commencement to be held on July 17th at 7pm in the main gym. We are fortunate to bring the Class of 2020 together again, and we hope all available seniors plan to attend their graduation ceremony. In order for GHS (and all county schools) to be granted permission for a large group ceremony, the following safety guidelines must be enforced.

Doors open: 6pm (ceremony begins at 7pm). Please follow social distancing while waiting to enter the building.

Parking: Graduate parking will be located in the band parking lot area.

Visitor parking will be located in the east parking lot (football stadium area).

Entrance: Graduates will enter through Door 32E (only).

Visitors will enter through the Athletic Complex entrance (Door 31N only).

Student seating: Graduates will be properly spaced throughout the main floor adhering to proper distancing recommendations. One set of lower bleachers will be pushed in to allow for this accommodation.

Visitor seating: Graduates will receive three tickets only for family, friends, etc. (visitors).

  • Visitors (3 per senior) will be seated in marked areas only.
  • School officials will ensure visitors are seated in designated areas.
  • Please note there will be limited handicap seating available.
  • There will be no auditorium seating available.
Ceremony: Due to limited floor and bleacher space, presenters (chosen by each senior) will not be in attendance. All graduates will be handed a diploma cover by the principal. No hand shakes or hugs will be given.

Post ceremony: Visitors must exit out the athletic complex entrance (same).

Graduates will exit out Door 32E (same).

Graduates and visitors will reunite in the parking lot, and we ask everyone to follow social distancing recommendations.

Graduation Practice: Practice will take place Thursday, July 16th at 4pm (main gym). All visitor tickets (3 per senior) will be distributed at that time. Also, if you would like to ring the bell or have your picture taken with the bell, it will be available after our practice session. The bell will not be available at Friday night’s ceremony.

This plan has been approved by the Johnson County Health Department, and your attendance will verify you understand and will follow these requirements. We understand there will be some frustrations with some of the accommodations; however, we hope everyone comes with a positive attitude and ready to celebrate our seniors.

Lastly, the graduation ceremony will be live streamed so family members and friends can watch live from home. We will provide more details as we near July 17th. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact an administrator at 317-889-4000 Monday through Thursday from 8:00am to noon. Thank you.

GHS (drive-by) military sendoff and celebration

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
GHS has four seniors reporting for boot camp before our July 17th commencement ceremony. To honor our military students, GHS will host a drive-by sendoff on Thursday, May 28th from 7-8pm. All four seniors will be setup (properly spaced) in front of the building, and cars will drive by, show their support, and give these four young men a graduation ceremony they will never forget. We ask everyone to remain in their cars. Route is simple - come down the boulevard, turn at the first right, loop around to the front of building (where busses park), and exit out the boulevard.

The four students are Logan (Marines), Blake (Marines), Johnathan (Army), and Josh (Army).

We hope you can make it and give these brave young men a proper GHS sendoff.

2019-2020 Yearbook Distribution - July 10

Posted by on in Greenwood High School News
Distribution of the 2019-2020 yearbooks along with the quarantine supplements will be distributed at the school on July 10 between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Students and parents will remain in their cars and form a line in front of the building to enforce social distancing. Signs will direct the way. Also, students need to have some form of ID. School IDs and driver's licenses would be perfect, but other identification cards -- like library cards -- would work. This will speed up the car line. Anyone who cannot pick up the yearbook on July 10 will need to wait until the first week of school to get the books and magazines. A few extras are still available, and interested parents should contact Denise Roberts at droberts@gws.k12.in.us

Each yearbook purchaser will receive a complementary Quarantine supplement, which is a 36-page magazine that will peel and stick in the back of the yearbook and provide stories, photos, and information about the pandemic's effect on students, faculty, and the community.

Congratulations to Faith Peebles, Mallory Watson, and Anna Lowe for leading the newspaper and yearbook staffs in creating this amazing supplement during remote learning and to Mallory Watson for her leadership all year in creation of the yearbook itself.
