Thank you for supporting the SW Art Program!!!

Posted by on in Southwest Elementary News
Ms. Webb would like to thank everyone who came out last Thursday to enjoy the 2015 Art Show and Family Ice-Cream Night!  It was a HUGE success, and it was amazing to see so many families supporting a night of the visual arts!  There was so much to do and see: framed artwork, photo op with silly props, mural drawing station, and of course ICE CREAM!

We were able to raise a little over $800 for art supplies for next school year!!!  That addition will almost double Ms. Webb's usual budget for supplies!!!  WOO HOO!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Continue reading

Mrs. Zaborowsky's class made 22 birthday bags for a local food pantry.  Each birthday bag had a cake mix, tub of icing, candles, and a blank birthday card for families that come to the food pantry to bake a cake for someone in their family.

What a fun idea!  Mrs. Z's class, we're so proud of how you are helping out your community!

Wrapping up Chinese New Year

Posted by on in Southwest Elementary News
Ms. Webb has wrapped up celebrating the Chinese New Year!  All grades got to learn more about the most important holiday on the Chinese calendar.  Festivities began on February 19th and culminated with the Lantern Festival on March 5th.  Kindergarten and 2nd grade made two different versions of lanterns to celebrate the festival that is the last day of the Chinese New Year. 1st grade synergized as a team to create the awesome Dragon (seen in the picture) that they then took on parade around the entire school! 3rd Grade learned about the Chinese character for, double happiness, as it is seen during these celebrations.  Last, but not least, 4th grade created their own scratch off paper to draw vases inspired by the ones seen during the Ming Dynasty! Whew! It was a lot of art and a lot of fun!  Continue reading

STEM Field Trip for Mrs. Habig's Class

Posted by on in Southwest Elementary News
Mrs. Habig's class went on a field trip Tuesday to  Starbase. It was funded by the department of defense, and it is a STEM field trip. STEM stands for science technology engineering and mathmatics. Several experiments and activities included: measuring with the graduated cylinder, using a triple beam balance, saving an egg! Students discussed engineering and design then had to come up with a way to keep an egg from cracking when it was the thrown into a wall. Students had to budget money to buy supplies to protect their egg. The field trip has been a huge sucess so far, and Mrs. Habig's class will continue to go for the next four Tuesdays. Continue reading
