Hello GHS students and parents.
We want to thank you for supporting and contributing to our remote learning program. We wish circumstances were different, but we feel students are undergoing an educational experience that has benefits, and one many students may encounter later in life.
In this email, we would like to address the topic of grades, in particular semester grades. A semester grade is the final grade awarded and placed on a student’s transcript. It’s important to understand the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) is highly encouraging all high schools to award a semester grade for all students grades 9-12. Colleges, universities, NCAA Clearinghouse, scholarships, etc. will require letter grades. Pass/Fail is not a viable option for high school students as it may negatively impact a student's future. All semester grades earned this semester will be placed on a student’s transcript, including seniors.
So, at the end of this school year, we are asking all teachers to assign semester grades to all high school students. Semester grades will be based on a combination of 3rd quarter grades and 4th quarter work. Final exams will not take place this school year. Please note all students have already been awarded a 3rd quarter grade.
Teachers will be assigning semester grades based on the following criteria:
- A student can raise his/her semester grade above the 3rd quarter grade if he/she submits above standard work during the remote learning process. That’s a great incentive to do your best!
- A student’s semester grade will remain the same as his/her 3rd quarter grade as long as that student continues to be engaged/active in his/her classes. Simply stated, if students submit their work, with quality and effort, semester grades will not suffer (lower).
- A student’s semester grade could be lower than the 3rd quarter grade if he/she refuses to be engaged/active in his/her classes, or a student submits only a limited number of assignments. A “limited number of assignments” will be at the teacher’s discretion. Please keep in contact with your teacher to discuss if your grade is in jeopardy.
All students enrolled in AP and ACP (dual credit) courses will follow the grading scale of the university (or assigned teacher) awarding the semester grade. Central Nine (C9) semester grades are awarded by C9 teachers.
We hope this answers questions regarding semester grades. Please contact your teacher first if you have any questions. If they are unable to answer your question(s), please contact a school administrator or counselor. We appreciate everyone’s understanding, and we hope all students and families are safe and healthy. We miss our students. Thank you.
