Guidance Department

We believe every student deserves the opportunity to achieve his or her potential. Every student has the capacity to learn, and the right to develop a positive self-image.

Students learn best when encouraged, directed, and focused through sound instruction, guidance and counseling. School counselors strive to provide all students with the academic, psychological and interpersonal skills necessary to succeed in school and in life.

Please call or email your child’s counselor if you have any questions or need to set up a parent-team conference. All the counselors “travel” with their students. The counselors start with the students as sixth graders and stay with them throughout their middle school years. By staying with the students all three years, the counselors have a better opportunity to get to know the students and their concerns. We look forward to working with you and your child.

  • GMS Support Groups
The guidance department offers a variety of counseling opportunities at GMS. Small group counseling activities are a good way to discover more about yourself and to learn new skills. Groups meet once a week for six weeks during the school day. Parent permission is required. The following groups are offered:

GI BLUES: Many of our students have a family member or close friend who is currently deployed and serving in our military. If you are experiencing a stressful and worrisome time due to your loved ones being so far from home, then this group is for you. The focus of the group will be sharing and supporting, with a student generated service project.

PROUD TO BE ME focuses on your own self-esteem. Learn to be a better friend to yourself and others. All relationships depend a lot on YOU. Learn to feel better about yourself and not be be so critical of one's faults.

CHANGING FAMILIES is a real issue for many students. This group offers you information and support for those students who have experienced divorce or blended families.

LIFE AND LOSS: Grief is experienced when we have a loss. This loss can be through the death of a parent, grandparent, sibling or friend. Sharing your grief can help you gain support.

IN CONTROL: Anger sometimes gets the best of us. This group offers you a chance to learn skills to manage your anger. You don't have to change the way you feel, just the way you behave.

CONCERNED OTHERS is a group for students who are concerned about someone they love who drinks too much.

STRESSBUSTERS is a group for students who would like to learn stress management skills. Between school, home, friends, and everyday pressures, it is imperative that we learn how to cope with stress in our lives.

LIFE SKILLS is a group that focuses on real life issues teens face. You will identify current topics of concern and then explore and practice strategies to deal with these issues. Possible topics include peer pressure, goal setting, relationships, and decision making.
